Um... wow. Makemake. Okay. Apparently it's named after a Polynesian (Rapa Nui/Easter Island) creator god. Reference.

On the Celestia forum,
granthutchison wrote:The name (pronounce it makki-makki) comes from the creation myth of Rapa Nui (Easter Island): a reference to 2005 FY9's informal designation, "Easter Bunny".
So presumably we can expect something from the mythology of Christmas Island when 2003 EL61 ("Santa") gets an official name.

O_o I use that exact texture for my "art" of Gliese 436 c in Celestia. Of course I'll have to remove the planet now.

They officially classified Makemake as a Plutoid and Dwarf Planet! Man I've waited a long time for them to declare a new Dwarf Planet since they first defined the term. I'm excited. We have a new Dwarf Planet in the family or a new Planet if you want to ignore the current planet definition. I can only assume there's another couple on the way soon.

I was reading wikipedia and they said it is speculated that 41 known objects might be Dwarf Planets, there might be over 200 Dwarf Planets overall in the Kuiper Belt, and if you go outside the Kuiper Belt, there might be 2000 Dwarf Planets. When hearing that, I'm kinda thankfull that they decided to classify things the way they did... What am I saying? They're planets, arg *beats head on wall*.

At this moment, among the Dwarf Planets, we have exactly one member of each of the following dynamic groups:

Main asteroid belt object - Ceres
Plutino - Pluto
Kuiper Belt Object - Makemake
Scattered Disk Object - Eris

Can't say that for much longer.

2005 EL61 is known to have two satellites, as do Sylvia and one or couple other asteroids... and then there's a whole bunch of asteroids with one satellite/binary asteroids, so Venus et al. are far from the top.

Let's hope the 2005 EL61 discoverer issue is cleared ASAP so it can be made an official dwarf planet too.

I thought it was cleared? Wasn't Brown given the credit for discovery?

Recent occultation results suggest the dwarf planet Makemake lacks atmosphere.

Mike Brown weighs in on the Ortiz et al. (2012) paper's claim of a density of 1.70.3 g/cc for Makemake.
