A Wiki?

Post by Stalker on 9th August 2009, 2:33 pm

Hi.

I completely forgot to speak to you about it. By registering me on Wetpaint to create my site, I found that website. This website was created by the one who created this twitter, this other website and this blog.

May be you (the English speakers) can combine with him or simply write on his wetpaint (what is nothing else than a very intuitive wiki ) to do a true Extrasolar Vision II.

My own website is here: Exoplanètes

I've been considering creating an Extrasolar Visions type website for some time, but every time I try web design I get frustrated and annoyed thanks to limited support for various techniques I'd want to use, and the difficulties of cross-browser consistency.

Plus it'd be a lot more work to do initial setup - John Whatmough had the advantage of starting when there were only a handful of known exoplanets, rather than the current total which is approaching 400...

I'd be willing to help out with that. I've got a whole lot of exoplanet notes organiszed into html files, one for each planetary system. Created it back when there was only 150 or so, so I can imagine it would be rough now, but it's something I'd certainly be willing to help with.

There are more planets than some years ago... But you are also numerous more!

You can also make as me: write first articles concerning the most important planets and systems

I suppouse it's easier to make a site to keep track of the planetary systems by doing it data-driven. Easy as pie with ASP+SQLServer so it can be queried and updated with ease. It's the variety of data formats and sources of information what makes me wary to try to do it myself.

Maybe we could come to a consensus of what information is relevant for a exoplanets database design and what is the more pleaseant and effective way to make the input/output of data.

The problem with the data-driven idea is that there is no point duplicating EPE, which already does a good job of keeping track of things. Need to do something which EPE doesn't do.

Incidentally I do like the first page of the Wiki... the author is at great pains to state that they are the Official resource on exoplanetology... Wink

The articles of his blog are also sometimes very open to criticism. But he has the merit to have created a site. Why not to help him?

When I began in the webmastering, I also had tendency to take me for God. But in fact it is only underlining his motivation and his will to make his website the Official Wiki of Exoplanetology. After all, isn't it the only one at the moment?

I stumbled across another extrasolar wiki this morning at Wikia (before reading this thread). It's pretty much a blank slate right now. Did someone here create it?

http://extrasolarplanet.wikia.com/wiki/Extrasolar_Planet_Wiki

I need to figure out what to do now. I have a mini wiki on the scratchpad wiki that I've been maintaining since 2007 that I was thinking about converting to a normal one, but now a normal one already exists on wikia. I don't really want to merge my material with a different wiki though and would rather it be just my own thing though. I should probably try to convert it to my own personal wiki one of these days.

My wiki:
http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/Exoplanetary_Wiki

My wiki exists mainly for me to keep track of the identities of the extrasolar planetary systems (by giving the special ones recognizable short descriptions), so I can say "oh yeah, that system", since names like HD XXXXXX don't mean anything to me. I also keep track of all the news articles I find on extrasolar planets there. It's too much work to make fancy pages with data and stuff for each system, when that information is on wikipedia or other places, so I just provide links to those places.

Wikimedia is too dificult to edit. Wetpaint is the more intuitive wiki.

I haven't toyed with either, but from first glance, Wiki-based pages seem to have an edge over Wetpaint-based pages due to the way advertising is handled.

On the other hand, Firefox 4 may finally have got to the stage where some of the techniques I'd want to use have become feasible...

No promises of anything for a while though...
