Pluto demoted, again

Post by Sirius_Alpha on 14th June 2008, 12:55 am

The International Astronomical Union has decreed that Pluto is to no longer be worthy of the title of "Dwarf Planet", and that a more appropriate title of "Plutoid" is to be considered the class of object, within which Pluto shall hereby find itself.

As far as I can tell from the news reports, "Plutoid" is a category of dwarf planets intended so that various large trans-Neptunian objects can be named as if they are dwarf planets even though the dwarf planet category has not been defined properly yet.

Where does it say that Plutoids are not dwarf planets?

P.S. this terminology is fast getting ridiculous.

I find that well this new category, then it is always a dwarf planet. It's better than the time when it was planet.

Are you sure it was demoted.......

Ugh this is confusing me way more than it really should. Were they trying to give it a new status? Were they demoting it? Why only the bright objects? What of Quaoar and others like it that are dark yet similiarly sized? It's nice that there trying to sort this out but it's not helping any IMO.
