The atmospheres of OGLE-TR-56b and TrES-3

Post by Lazarus on 14th January 2009, 6:01 pm

SPACE.com story
Spitzer? We don't need no steenking Spitzer!
The team took more than 600 images of OGLE-TR056b with both telescopes. The planet is hotter than any detected by Spitzer so far — its atmosphere is more than 4,400 degrees Fahrenheit (2,400 degrees Celsius).

The observations also indicated that the planet has little to no cloud cover and a static atmosphere with little circulation, López-Morales told SPACE.com in an email.
I guess that means there's little heat being circulated to the dark side, rather like ups And b, which for such a hot planet would be expected from the pM/pL division.

This is awesome! Given that the OGLE planets are typically so far away, I wouldn't have expected to ever hear their names in a direct detection. UniverseToday has another article on it.

Here's the paper for OGLE-TR-56b. (Claims to be "forthcoming", but is available there).
http://www.aanda.org/index.php?option=article&access=doi&doi=10.1051/0004-6361:200811268

TrES-3 b was also detected. Here's the paper. (Forthcoming as of now)

This is also great news. I <3 Spitzer, but as the paper says, we're going to lose a lot of its capabilities when its cryogen runs out. Ground-based detection of exoplanets in the infrared will help fill in the gap between Spitzer and JWST.

What is the "current models of the physical properties of this
planet's upper atmosphere"?
