Land surface area, weathering and habitability

Post by Lazarus on 14th August 2012, 4:21 pm

Indication of insensitivity of planetary weathering behavior and habitable zone to surface land fraction

Finds the weathering rate is similar for planets with land surface areas down to ~1%. The climate on waterworlds may be unstable because of the lack of negative feedback from the silicate carbonate cycle, but they could potentially halt a moist greenhouse effect once enough water is removed to expose the continents (waterworld self-arrest).
