Planet Generator - collaboration

Post by marasama on 9th March 2012, 3:00 pm

Just looking to see if there is any interests in a collaboration for making a Planet Generator.

Basically thinking, you add the parameters and then click go, and the program spits out a planet(s) that follows that spec.

In what format would this programme be written?

Program language not an issue.
I think I or someone can do/team on that.
Programming is the easy part.

The hard part is getting the science to fit.
I know some items but I'm not fully up to date with current news.
And also need verifications.

What kind of output are you getting at? CGI , analitical description , graphic representation on boundaries?
I'm a competent database admin and programmer in vb.net , and may pitch in to the effort , but the graphics part are out of my domain.

What sort of parameters? Mass, density, radius and temp? Is it to have surface generation as well?

Parameters:
0) Solar/Subsolar Primary (or if binary/trinary).
1) Orbital Zone(s): If circular, should be one, if eccentric can be many zones.
2) Orbital Period: Won't be time, but be simplified as in short, long, very long, etc.
3) Orbital Wobble: Probably not a major factor.
4) Eccentricity:
5) Inclination:
6) Rotation Type: ie. Locked, retrograde, etc.
7) Rotation Period: Won't be time, but be simplified as in short, long, very long, etc.
8 ) Axial Tilt: This will affect the climate patterns on the planet.
9) Age:
10) Mass:
11) Diameter/Radius:
12) Magnetic Strength: This will be a factor towards the atmosphere.
13) Primary Composition(s): ie. Terrestrial, Carbonaceous, Icy, etc.
14) Layer Seperation: ie. Core-Mantle vs. Coreless worlds.
15) Venting Heat: Is the planet holding in heat or venting efficiently or somewhere between.
16) Atmosphere Thickness: ie. Tenuous, dense, etc.
17) Ring System(s): Simple, partial, complex, etc.
18) Accreting Material(s): ie. Mars-like world accreting dust by a nearby Mira-type star.
19) Satellite(s): Has small or large moons; many moons; no moons.

Basically, the user would input the values and press go.

Then the system will spit out the result(s).
And each result(s) will also include a generic picture of the world.

Oh yeah.

It'll include the classification that real astronomers give (ie. Hot Jupiter).
Probably also include Star Treks classes.
I'll probably put my own version.
And any of you that has a working version, can also be included.

sounds like a classical database driven web page to me. I'll give it a go.

ok 15 minutes worth of time , a base design to refine , but something along this lines..

Yes, it will be a setup like that.

I guess a few more things would be.
1) Catalog names.
2) Distance from Sol System.
3) Discovery date.
4) Discovered by.

Yup , the catalog is something i was wondering because a star/system/planet can be searched under a variety of catalog references , so the TCatalogSystem table deals with the search string format for each catalog system i.e. , searching for a star under the KOI or the NGC or Hip should yield the same results for the same stars , although their catalog numbers are unrelated or unmatched and do not parse the same way.
Discover date , discover by look like a good candidate for a "misc." table since they are not parameters very likely to be used in a search.
Sol System Distance and /or vector coordinates are indeed good search criteria , as would be Metalicy , measured in various metals ([Fe/H] , [Li/H] , or even more esoteric measures like [Li/Fe]/[H] )

The good thing in delegating the major part of the desing to the database is that the same setup works for web and for a desktop app

OK, I'll try to finalize some of the parameters and move forward from there.

Might decide to include fictitious worlds in the sample to use as examples.

Project is sort of deferred. Razz

Actaully, gotta take care of other stuff first.
Will get back to it when I have more time.

I still have a rough outline and will give you guys heads up on any changes.

but by then, hopefully more stuff appears on this subject in AJ papers. Smile
