trend in the periods of the planets being discovered

Post by tesh90 on Tue Jun 09, 2009 5:04 am

I have a lay question about the periods of planets discovered to date.

[img]http://exoplanet.eu/graph_correl.php?Global_Language=en&catPlanet[]=1&catPlanet[]=7&catPlanet[]=8&obs1=plDiscover&obs2=plPeriod&scalex=lin&scaley=log&minx=&miny=&maxx=&maxy=&resol=600&grille=on[/img]

If you do either of the above plots then it seems that there is a dearth of planets in the 10^2 days region of periodicities.
In case the graphs do not come up, then just plot the period of the planets discovered (log scale) against their mass or the year of their discovery.

Is this a real trend or a visual trick of the way the numbers are being plotted? It seems to leave room for smaller planets potentially...

Cheers,

First Graph
Second Graph

I suspect that it is a result of setting the scale to logarithmic. I'm unable to significantly reproduce that gap with a linear trend.

There is a known intermediate period planet desert for Jupiter-size planets around that range of periods.

If you use histogram mode you can see it as well... example
